Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Sahib

Birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Sahib

Globally, Sikhs honour the birthday of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, during the full moon of the month of Katak – typically in November. Known as Guru Nanak Gurpurb, Guru Nanak’s Prakash Utsav, or Guru Nanak Dev Ji Jayanti, it holds immense significance, with celebrations revolving around his teachings, and messages of peace and harmony.

It’s believed that a key moment in Guru Nanak’s life happened during a routine bath, when he mysteriously disappeared under the water, only to reemerge three days later. He explained he’d received a divine message from God – about the importance of equality, compassion and selfless service – which he dedicated his life to sharing. This formed the cornerstone of Sikhism. Today Guru Nanak’s birthday is celebrated by Sikhs with ‘Akhand Path’, a continuous reading of their holy scripture and ‘Langar’, a free community meal emphasising equality.
