Group B Strep Awareness Week
Group B Strep Awareness Week
The 8th July to 14th July, is an important annual event. An opportunity to spread awareness about Group B Strep (we’re considering shouting from the rooftops, can’t hurt right?). Group B Strep (or GBS as you’ll often see it called) is a type of bacteria that many people carry completely unknowingly. In fact, it’s surprisingly common and often causes no symptoms at all.
It affects a staggering 400,000 plus infants worldwide per year, making it so important to talk about during pregnancy and around birth. So we feel it is our duty to do our bit to get that number down. To reduce the cases where it can lead to serious infections in newborn babies, including sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. Whether that is striking up a conversation with your co-workers or at your Wednesday night book club, putting up a post on social media or chatting with the mums on the school run, every person who knows a little bit more about what GBS is and who it affects – helps. Did I mention shouting from the rooftops?
