Lailat al Miraj

Lailat al Miraj

Lailat al Miraj is a revered Islamic event, commemorating Prophet Muhammad’s night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and his ascent to heaven. Observed on the 27th day of Rajab in the lunar Islamic calendar, its date shifts each year in the Gregorian calendar. Falling on different dates annually, depending on the lunar cycle, Lailat al Miraj—also known as Isra and Mi’raj or Laylat al Miraj—is a pivotal night in Islamic teachings, blending miraculous narratives with deep spirituality.

The story features Muhammad’s celestial journey on Buraq to Jerusalem’s ‘Farthest Mosque’, leading prophets in prayer before his heavenly ascent, termed Miraj, meaning “ladder” in Arabic. Here, he receives the commandment for Muslims’ five daily prayers. Briefly mentioned in the Quran’s “Sura Al-Isra,” hadiths enrich the details. Lailat al Miraj is marked by special prayers and storytelling, emphasising its significance in Islamic faith.
