Ramadan
Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is a deeply spiritual time for Muslims. It commemorates the moment when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, the dates of Ramadan shift each year, typically moving about 10-12 days earlier. During this holy month, Muslims observe daytime fasting, focusing on reflection, self-improvement, and devotion – key elements of the Five Pillars of Islam.
Globally, Ramadan’s observance varies culturally. But at its core shines unity and communal harmony. In the Middle East, elaborate iftars (the meal to break the fast) and illuminated mosques are common, with special night prayers held. Southeast Asia sees vibrant bazaars, while Western countries often feature communal iftars and charitable activities in mosques or community centres. The month ends with Eid al-Fitr, a day of communal prayers, feasting, and charity, celebrating the conclusion of Ramadan.
