Sukkot
Sukkot
Sukkot begins today! This jubilant Jewish holiday usually falls in the crisp days of autumn, between late September and October. This year, it lands on Wednesday 16th October and kicks off a week of gratitude, marking the end of the harvest and commemorating the Israelites’ 40-year sojourn in the desert post-Egyptian exodus. It’s a time of gratitude for Jewish people who gather in remembrance of their ancestors’ hardships and resilience.
This week, Jews worldwide take part in heartfelt traditions of building and dwelling in a Sukkah, a sort of ‘pop-up hut’ that symbolises the Israelites’ desert shelters – a practice that brings folks together. The ritual of waving the Four Species — etrog, lulav, hadas, and aravah — in all directions signifies God’s presence everywhere and the beauty of nature. Sukkot blends historical significance with modern celebration, igniting a sense of community and heritage connection.
