Multi-Generational Teams

Every generation imagines itself to be more intelligent than the one that went before it, and wiser than the one that comes after it – George Orwell

Picture this: someone sends a detailed email. Another person replies with a thumbs-up emoji. A third picks up the phone to “just have a quick chat” about it. Meanwhile, someone else is wondering why this wasn’t a Slack message in the first place. Welcome to the multi-generational workplace, where “professional” means five different things and nobody’s quite sure whose version is right anymore.

For the first time in history, five generations are working side by side. That’s exciting in theory. In practice, it’s why honest feedback lands differently, flexibility gets misunderstood, and half your meetings can feel like everyone’s speaking a slightly different language. This session is about making sense of those differences and turning them into an advantage rather than a source of frustration.

We start with the benefits and challenges of multi-generational workplaces. Then we explore four generations, Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z and the key events and experiences that shaped each one. These influences help explain their different perspectives and expectations at work. Rather than relying on stereotypes, we focus on understanding why people view ambition, authority, and flexibility in different ways.

We take a closer look at Gen Z, cutting through the myths to explore the real challenges and motivators. From there, we explore communication preferences across generations and how to adapt your approach without losing your own voice. We’ll also look at the difference between competency and potential and and how to support people at varying stages of their careers with fairness and clarity.

This session is honest and practical. You’ll leave with clearer insight into generational dynamics and concrete ways to lead and collaborate across different ages and expectations. Because when generations work well together, teams get smarter, more creative, and a whole lot easier to be part of.
