All Saints Day
All Saints Day
All Saints Day, on November 1 in Western churches, is a time for Christians to honour all the saints – known and unknown – who’ve made it to heaven, dating way back to the 4th century AD. In Western tradition, it’s right after Halloween, but Eastern Orthodox and some Eastern Catholic churches observe it on the first Sunday after Pentecost. Many Catholics head to mass, often with a reading of the Beatitudes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.
The day involves unique customs in different regions, reflecting local traditions. Families might adorn graves of loved ones with flowers and candles, honouring both their memory and the saints. Communities also hold processions and special church services to sing hymns and share saints’ stories. This celebration embodies the humility, mercy, and peacemaking taught in the Beatitudes, making All Saints Day a rich, multifaceted celebration of faith.
