Disability History Month (UK)
Disability History Month (UK)
Every year, from 16th November to 16th December, the UK observes Disability History Month. An acknowledgement of the histories, identities and rights of disabled people, this month raises awareness of struggles, while celebrating triumphs, and advocating for real change under the ‘social model’ of disability. Important laws like the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities and the Equalities Act (2010) come into the spotlight, alongside the diverse – and often overlooked – identities within the disabled community.
Why does this month matter to all of us? Because it’s about seeing the world through a different lens, recognising the challenges and joys in the lives of disabled individuals. It’s a call to make society more inclusive, ensuring disabled voices are not just included, but are leading the way to a kinder, fairer world.
