Disability Pride Month
Disability Pride Month
Disability Pride Month, observed every July, celebrates the unique identities within the disability community. It started as a single day in Boston in 1990 – the same year the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted – and has since evolved into a full-blown month of festivities. Similar to the spirit that fuels movements like LGBTQ+ and Black Pride.
This month marks a transformative concept for many with disabilities, challenging historical narratives where society often makes them feel inferior or ashamed. ‘Disability’ and ‘pride’ coming together is empowering. It encourages self-love and appreciation of diverse experiences. It also sparks important conversations about the challenges faced by people with disabilities and works to dismantle societal stigmas, discrimination and systemic ableism. So, why not spread the word? Your voice has the potential to inspire others to foster more respect and empathy. And those are powerful things.
