International Day of Sign Languages
International Day of Sign Languages
Oh, look! It’s the 23rd September which means it’s International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL), a yearly celebration that the United Nations General Assembly set up to spotlight how crucial sign languages are for the rights of deaf people worldwide. It’s all about raising awareness of the issues deaf people face and celebrating the rich culture of sign language.
Did you know there are about 72 million deaf people around the world? And they use over 300 different sign languages! Recognising IDSL matters a lot because it’s about including every single one of these people. Oh, and this neatly fits with the UN’s sustainable goals for providing inclusive, top-notch education for all. By shouting about today, we can all help build a world where everyone, deaf or not, gets the same chance to learn and be part of the community.
