Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia Awareness Month, every October, is a big event in the global neurodiversity movement, focusing on promoting accessibility, inclusivity, and celebrating dyslexic excellence. It’s actually part of a string of neurodiversity awareness initiatives this month, including Dyslexia Awareness Week and World Dyslexia Day, alongside ADHD Awareness Month and Dysgraphia Awareness Day. Initiated in 2002, this month-long celebration has grown from something small to a major international movement.
Despite being one of the most common learning challenges worldwide, dyslexia is often sorely misunderstood and surrounded by stereotypes. Misconceptions, rooted in outdated ideas or a lack of understanding, can majorly impact learning and job opportunities for dyslexic folks. So it’s really important to dispel these myths by fostering a genuine understanding of dyslexia. Recognising that dyslexic people aren’t defined by their challenges (and that no one should be!) helps create inclusive environments – both in schools and workplaces.
