National Reconciliation Week (AU)
National Reconciliation Week (NRW) lands between May 27th and June 3rd each year. It marks a crucial period dedicated to commemorating two landmark events in Australia’s reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision. This is a chance for Australians from all walks of life to deepen their understanding of their nation’s history, and drum-up engagement for national reconciliation.
When the British arrived in Australia, they proclaimed it ‘terra nullius,’ ignoring the existing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ connection to the land. This stance was overturned in 1992 by the High Court of Australia through the landmark Mabo decision, recognising Indigenous Australians as the land’s rightful custodians, thanks to the activism of Eddie Mabo. 2026’s NRW theme is, “Now More Than Ever,” emphasising the critical need to push for Indigenous rights, rally support against racism, and amplify First Nations voices. Now more than ever.
