Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is a Christian holiday that celebrates the presence of Christ’s body and blood in the Eucharist (Holy Communion). Usually observed on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday and occasionally on the Sunday. It typically falls in late May or early June. Established in the 13th century by the Catholic Church, the day honours Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, recognising that through the Eucharist, believers are drawn closer to Christ in mind, body, and spirit.
Also known as the ‘Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ,’ today’s celebrations vary, with processions and street decorations in mostly Catholic countries like Spain and Portugal. Expect floats carrying the Blessed Sacrament, and floral carpets on the streets. In Latin America and the Philippines, similar customs happen, but specific traditions vary. Most Protestant denominations don’t separately celebrate today, but emphasise the Eucharist’s significance in regular worship services.
