Holy Thursday
Holy Thursday
Holy Thursday, AKA Maundy Thursday, which lands on the Thursday before Easter each year, commemorates the last supper, as immortalised in the painting by Leonardo Da Vinci. Christians recognise this event as the first ever holy communion, the initiation of the order of the priesthood and the moment Jesus accepted his role as a sacrifice for all humankind.
Today is celebrated in lots of ways worldwide. In the Philippines, for instance, families chant the Passion of Christ, while Spain hosts elaborate Semana Santa processions. In Rome, the pope washes the feet of volunteers representing the apostles, symbolising that no one is too important to serve others. In Greece, bread is blessed while in Poland they bless “święconka” baskets of foods like bread, eggs, ham and horseradish, forming the Easter meal. While, in the US, communal foot washing occurs in church services.
