International Women in Engineering Day
International Women in Engineering Day
International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), observed annually on June 23rd, is an initiative by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2023, INWED emphasises the vast yet underrepresented contributions of women in engineering. Here are the stats: according to 2022 data, only 16.5% of the engineering workforce are women – and these roles are often adjacent to core engineering. Today is about highlighting this gender gap and inspiring young women and girls to explore careers in this vital field.
Originating in the UK in 2014 to mark WES’s 95th anniversary, INWED gained global recognition with UNESCO patronage in 2016. Despite its international growth and celebration of women engineers’ achievements, the gender gap persists. INWED acts as a call for gender equality, focusing on overcoming barriers faced by women and girls in engineering and empowering them to excel in fulfilling and diverse engineering roles.
