Intersex Day of Solidarity
Intersex Day of Solidarity
Intersex Day of Solidarity, every November 8th, is a tribute to the history and struggles of intersex people. Starting as Intersex Day of Remembrance, it honours the birthday of Herculine Barbin, a 19th-century French intersex person whose life story was posthumously brought to light by philosopher Michel Foucault. Barbin’s story offers a glimpse into the lived experience of an intersex person in a time of limited understanding. It’s a journey into the past as we remember those who navigated intersex life in a less enlightened era.
The inaugural Intersex Day of Solidarity in 2005, marked a mighty step towards raising awareness of intersex human rights. Today it invites action for solidarity and support for the intersex community. It’s a day to reflect on the narratives of those like Herculine Barbin, who lived their lives at the intersection of gender, identity, and societal norms.
