Stonewall Riots Anniversary (US)
Every June 28th, the Stonewall Riots Anniversary marks a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history. It commemorates the events of late June 1969, when members of the LGBTQ+ community at the Stonewall Inn in New York stood up against police brutality and discrimination, sparking a series of protests that catalysed the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement. Today, we reflect on the courage of those who fought for their rights.
Stonewall’s history remains largely forgotten – and a mystery among many young folks. It exists more as a myth in our collective consciousness. However, the real story can – and should – be shared. Even though there’s been progress for LGBTQ+ people, discrimination is still widespread. Today reminds us that the journey towards equality has been long and hard-fought, but also fruitful. It also serves to inspire new generations to push for a world where everyone can live authentically. Right on!
