Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year dances into view between January 21st and February 20th each year. This multi-day fiesta symbolises one of the most significant occasions in East and Southeast Asian cultures. Each year in the Lunar calendar represents one of the twelve zodiac animals, and 2024 welcomes the Year of the Dragon on February 10th – igniting global festivities.

While often referred to as ‘Chinese New Year’ or ‘Spring Festival (春节),’ Lunar New Year embraces a variety of customs from many Asian countries – each with their own unique cultural flavours and traditions. In China, celebrations include dragon and lion puppet dances, firecrackers and giving red money-filled enveloped to children. While in Korea folks don traditional attire and children receive blessings and gifts. Vietnamese families visit temples to pray for good fortune, feasting on pickled scallions and candied fruits. And in the Philippines, locals wear polka dots, symbolising prosperity.
