Matariki (NZ)

Matariki (NZ)

Star light, star bright, the first stars I see tonight! Matariki twinkles into view today. A cherished time in Aotearoa, the appearance of the Matariki star cluster heralds the Māori New Year, from late May to early July. Firmly anchored in Māori culture, it’s a time for reflection, celebration, and intentions. Known worldwide as Pleiades or the Seven Sisters, the arrival of Matariki symbolises unity and reflection.

Matariki is home to hundreds of stars, yet just nine are visible to the naked eye – each with a unique story. In Māori mythology, the cluster symbolises a mother and her six daughters. Celebrations are rooted in Mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge), emphasising remembrance, joy, and optimism. Traditionally, folks would light fires and give offerings – a practice that continues in many forms. Today, communities gather, share meals, enjoy music, and storytelling. It’s a time when the cultural fabric of Aotearoa shines brightest.
