Stress Awareness Day
Stress Awareness Day
The first Wednesday in November is the UK’s annual Stress Awareness day, aimed at identifying and coping with harmful stress. Although our stress response is incredibly useful in an evolutionary sense – ‘Argh! A lion!… RUN!’ – It becomes a problem when we are exposed to stresses that we have to tolerate and that we can’t escape from. ‘Argh! Multiple converging deadlines and an overflowing inbox!… RUN!’ If only it were that simple…
But by opening a dialogue with friends, family and co-workers, working on techniques to recognise and deal with stress, as well as making time for our favourite stress-busters; be it yoga, mindfulness, bench pressing, or gaming, we can help keep stress at bay. Stress Awareness Day is all about recognising that stress is a part of being human. It doesn’t mean we need to quit, but it might mean it’s time to rest.
