World Hijab Day
World Hijab Day
February 1st is World Hijab Day – a global event aimed at fostering religious expression and cultural understanding. The concept of hijab in Islam reaches beyond women covering their heads; it encompasses a broader philosophy of modesty that applies to men and women. If you don’t know, Hijab is a style of dress that’s been part of the Muslim faith for centuries. Women usually cover all but their faces; from hands to wrists, and (in lots of cases) the ankles and feet too. For men, it’s more about covering the lower body.
Today originated from Nazma Khan, a Bangladeshi-New Yorker, who envisioned a tool for promoting cross-cultural understanding. By inviting women from diverse backgrounds to experience wearing the hijab for a day, the movement seeks to demystify the often misunderstood practice. Folks in over 150 countries join, with volunteers and ambassadors from various walks of life.
