Deaf Awareness Month (US)

September marks Deaf Awareness Month (US), a time dedicated to increasing awareness of the communication needs and unique identities of the deaf and hard of hearing community, which makes up roughly 13% of the US population. This month focuses on celebrating the positive aspects of deafness, promoting social inclusion, and acknowledging the valuable work of supportive organisations.
 

Recognising Deaf Awareness Month is vital. It educates about Deaf culture, encourages equal access and pushes the importance of diverse communication methods. This awareness fosters a more inclusive society, where every individual’s experience and abilities are valued and seen. It’s a step towards understanding and appreciating the richness of Deaf culture and the contributions of those who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
