Hanukkah
Hanukkah
Happy Hanukkah! Known as the Festival of Lights, this is a big Jewish holiday that kicks off on Kislev 25 (in December, according to the Gregorian calendar). It lasts eight days and honours the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after it was reclaimed from the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. During Hanukkah, families light the menorah, a nine-branched candelabrum, adding one candle each night.
Hanukkah holds diverse meanings for Jewish folks worldwide. It symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and hope over adversity. Tasty fried foods – like latkes and sufganiyot – are eaten. People exchange gifts, play the dreidel game, and retell the story of the miraculous oil. Fostering unity, Hanukkah’s messages of resilience and hope resonate with people of all backgrounds. It’s a celebration of history, faith, and the enduring spirit of the Jewish people.
