Māori Language Day (NZ)
Māori Language Day (NZ)
Te Rā Nui o Te Reo Māori, or Māori Language Day, celebrated on September 14th, commemorates the 1972 petition to Aotearoa’s (New Zealand) parliament for the revitalisation of the Māori language. Te reo Māori has played a huge part in shaping the country’s cultural heritage. And today is about recognising this, while promoting the language’s growth and appreciation across the country.
Te reo Māori is considered a ‘taonga,’ which means a treasure and one to be cherished and protected. That’s the essence of today! Schools and communities come together to help foster a deeper connection (or ‘hononga’) with the Māori culture. And celebrations often include workshops and cultural performances, designed to boost the use of the language and make learning Māori both fun and accessible. Part of Māori Language Week, Te Reo is a little reminder of the ongoing efforts to keep this rich language alive and thriving.
