New Zealand Sign Language Week
New Zealand Sign Language Week
Hands up for New Zealand Sign Language Week, celebrated every May! This week is all about bridging the gap between Deaf and hearing communities in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Led by Deaf Aotearoa and supported by grants from the NZSL Board, it’s a celebration of inclusivity, raising awareness about New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) and its vital role in creating a more connected society.
This is a chance for everyone to connect, learn vital NZSL phrases and appreciate the rich culture of Aotearoa’s Deaf community. With its unique grammar and expressive style, NZSL allows for vibrant communication through body language and facial expressions. So, why not learn one sign a day or practice seven minutes of signing daily? Getting involved helps foster more understanding, while also enabling the Deaf community to thrive and break down barriers. Yay!
