New Zealand Sign Language Week
New Zealand Sign Language Week
Hands in the air for New Zealand Sign Language Week, which lands every year in May. Think of this week as a linguistic leap, bridging the gap between the Deaf and hearing folks in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Spearheaded by Deaf Aotearoa and given a boost by the NZSL Board with grants, it’s a time dedicated to weaving inclusivity into our social fabric by spreading the word (and signs) of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).

This is a chance for everyone to connect, learn vital NZSL phrases and appreciate the rich culture of Aotearoa’s Deaf community. With its unique grammar and expressive style, NZSL allows for vibrant communication through body language and facial expressions. So, why not learn one sign a day or practice seven minutes of signing daily? Getting involved helps foster more understanding, while also enabling the Deaf community to thrive and break down barriers. Yay!
