Pink Shirt Day (NZ)
Pink Shirt Day (NZ)
Every May, Pink Shirt Day stands as Aotearoa’s (New Zealand’s) vibrant beacon against bullying in schools and workplaces, encouraging everyone to stand together. Sadly, Aotearoa is rated second-highest for school bullying out of 51 countries, with a troubling one in five Kiwis facing bullying at work too – making this day not just important, but vital.
Bullying goes beyond unkind words or actions; it can massively impact our mental health and wellbeing. Embracing today means contributing to a culture where diversity is celebrated, and everyone feels valued and safe. The Māori proverb “Kōrero Mai, Kōrero Atu, Mauri Tū, Mauri Ora – Speak Up, Stand Together, Stop Bullying!” encapsulates the essence of Pink Shirt Day, inviting us all to be part of a movement that takes decisive steps towards eradicating bullying, and celebrates the beauty in our differences. So, ask yourself: Kua rite koe? Are you in?
