Purim (Feast of Lots)
Purim (Feast of Lots)
Purim, also known as the Feast of Lots, is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the deliverance of the Jewish people from a plot to destroy them in ancient Persia, as narrated in the Book of Esther. The holiday is observed on the 14th day of Adar (which falls in either February or March, depending on the year). Its traditions include reading the Megillah (the Book of Esther), giving gifts, and donating to the poor.
Across the globe, Purim is celebrated with unique local customs. In Israel and many communities, it’s marked by costume-wearing, parades, and parties, symbolising the hidden miracle of Purim. In the US and Europe, synagogues often host humorous Purimspiels (plays), entertainingly recounting Esther’s story. Exchanging mishloach manot (food and drink packages) and giving to the needy are key aspects, highlighting community and generosity. Special foods like hamantaschen, a triangular pastry, are made, feeding into (pardon the pun) Purim’s festive and joyous atmosphere.
