World Autism Awareness Day
World Autism Awareness Day
World Autism Awareness Day lands every 2nd April, raising awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The aim? To create more inclusive environments in our schools, workplaces and beyond. Autism, a neurological condition, affects people uniquely (hence why it’s a Spectrum). Traits include the need for routine, sensory sensitivities, and distinct social interaction styles. There are many damaging stereotypes about autistic people, but the truth is they just need a little help understanding others – like playing a game where everybody else knows the rules except for you.
The journey to inclusivity, particularly in employment, remains challenging; only 29% of adults with autism are employed, highlighting the need for equal opportunities. Employers often overlook autistic folks in the workplace, but in doing so, they’re robbing themselves of skilled, passionate people. A big part of today is about breaking down barriers and valuing the contributions of autistic people.
