World Day Against Child Labour
World Day Against Child Labour
Annually, on June 12th, the World Day Against Child Labour brings global attention to the plight of millions of children forced into labour early in life. This day isn’t just about recognising the harsh realities these young people face; it’s a call to address their stolen childhoods and the urgent need to protect them.
Today dates back to 2002 when the International Labour Organisation (ILO) kick-started this observance. Over the past few years, crises, conflicts and the pandemic have plunged more families into poverty. The facts are pretty sobering: as of 2011, around 215 million child labourers were reported, with over half involved in hazardous work. It’s a stark reminder that child labour isn’t confined to far-off places. In countries like the US, kids are found working in dangerous environments. So, today is really an invitation to learn and take action.
