Corpus Christi Sunday
Corpus Christi Sunday
Corpus Christi, on May 30th this year, is a Christian holiday celebrating the presence of Christ’s body and blood within the eucharist (holy communion). Itβs always on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday, typically in late May or early June. Established in the 13th century by the Catholic Church, today honours Jesusβ sacrifice upon the cross, recognising that, through consuming holy communion, believers are brought closer to Christ in mind, body and spirit.β¨
Also known as the βFeast of the Body and Blood of Christ,β todayβs celebrations vary, with processions and street decorations in mostly Catholic countries like Spain and Portugal. Expect floats carrying the Blessed Sacrament, and floral carpets on the streets. In Latin America and the Philippines, similar customs happen, but specific traditions vary. Most Protestant denominations donβt separately celebrate today, but emphasise the Eucharist’s significance in regular worship services.β¨
