Epiphany
Epiphany
Epiphany, every January 6th in the Christian calendar, marks the culmination of the Christmas season. It commemorates the arrival of the Magi or three wise men, who journeyed to Bethlehem to present Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. It’s among the oldest Christian feast days, alongside Christmas and Easter, and Christians celebrate the revelation of Christ’s divinity at this time. The gift of gold represents his royal status, while frankincense symbolises his priestly role and myrrh, an embalming spice, foreshadows his sacrifice.
Known as Three Kings’ Day, it’s honoured in many ways, like the daring (and very chilly!) swim in Prague’s Vltava river, and the vibrant Three Kings Day Parade. In Mexico, families gather to enjoy Rosca de Reyes, a sweet bread with a hidden figurine of baby Jesus, signifying good fortune for the finder.
