International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
March 21st in 1960 marked a dark chapter in history with the Sharpeville massacre in South Africa. On this day, a peaceful anti-apartheid demonstration tragically ended when police fired on protestors, killing sixty-nine people. It’s since been designated by the UN as the annual International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (also known as End Racism Day), a call to action against racial hatred worldwide.
Despite the abolition of South Africa’s apartheid laws in 1991, racism is a pervasive global issue, with injustice and stigma still very much alive. Today, End Racism Day, is a chance to honour those who bravely stand against racial discrimination. It’s a day to empower people from all racial backgrounds, learn from past mistakes, and strive for a more inclusive future. For many organisations, it’s also a great inspiration to boost efforts in creating a workplace free from discrimination.
