Lent

Lent

At the end of February each year, Christians kick-off the period of Lent with Ash Wednesday – marking the 46 day countdown to Easter Sunday. Lent’s practice is like a symbol of personal sacrifice and a test of self-discipline – echoing the Christian parable of Jesus’s 40-day journey into the desert. It’s marked by prayer and fasting, while resisting the temptations of worldly distractions.

Christians worldwide observe Lent with diverse traditions. In Western countries, Ash Wednesday marks the start, with fasting and church services. Latin America celebrates with Carnival and solemn ceremonies. Eastern Orthodox communities fast strictly and have unique customs. In parts of Africa, fasting and prayer are common, while in Asia and the Middle East, various traditions and practices reflect the region’s cultural influences. Lent serves as a unifying spiritual period, demonstrating the richness of Christian traditions across the globe.
