Stephen Lawrence Day (UK)

Stephen Lawrence Day (UK)

Stephen Lawrence Day, held every April 22nd since 2019, is a poignant remembrance of the tragic murder of Stephen Lawrence, a black British teenager, in 1993. It’s a heartfelt time to reflect on the impact of racial violence and the quest for justice. Stephen was fatally stabbed by a group of six white youths in southeast London, targeted solely because of his race – highlighting deep-seated issues of racial discrimination within British society.

The insidious ripples of racial hatred not only tear at the fabric of society but also leave enduring scars on the collective conscience, challenging us to confront and heal deep-seated divisions. The aftermath of Stephen’s murder exposed institutional failings, with allegations of institutional racism. Today, commemorative activities led by the UK government and the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, promote social justice and remembrance of his life and his untimely death.
