Day of Silence (US)

Day of Silence, usually in April, is a powerful event that spotlights bullying and harassment of the LGBT community in schools. Kicked off as a University of Virginia class project, it ballooned from 150 to over 100 universities in one year – pretty impressive, right? The campaign took off when the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) stepped in in 2001, transforming it into a major national event, with its date shifting yearly to align with school calendars.

Why care? Well, we’re all human. Deserving of respect. This day is a quiet protest against prejudice. It muffles the noise of intolerance and shakes-up those stuck in their biassed ways. It’s not really about zipping your lips. It’s a loud cry for unity. A reminder that no matter our sexual or gender identity, we’re all in this together.
